On Tuesday night the Washington Nationals swept the St. Louis Cardinals to advance to the World Series.
Almost nobody in Seattle really cared or thought about it until they woke up the next morning and saw a flurry of tweets like this:
Jokes were flying around about the morbid mariners and their history, and honestly who can blame people for posting them.
It’s tough being a Mariners fan, if you’re still one. They haven’t made the playoffs in 19 seasons, and now they’re the only team to never make a World Series appearance.
It’s lonely at the bottom. To be honest, no one even knew that Mariners hadn’t made the World Series until those tweets showed up because most of the country doesn’t really care about that baseball team up in that remote part of the country.
But after seeing the Mariners trending on Twitter and digging through some of the tweets, I personally became all riled up reading some of these stupid tweets.
The tweets that made me angry were the ones saying something like this:
I’ve heard this same statement over and over again, and I think (hope) many people know that isn’t remotely possible and just a stupid idea.
I want an NBA team just as much as anyone else, but getting rid of the Mariners is not an option. Even though the Mariners are absolute garbage, they just renovated there field, and continue to do well financially.
Meanwhile the NBA has continued being difficult since they helped steal our team now over 10 years ago. While the NBA has been a thorn in Seattle’s side since being part of the heist, the NHL has practically volunteered itself to expand into Seattle in 2020.
So these tweets and people telling me this sort of fairy tale bullshit about trading the Mariners for an NBA team are just ludicrous and preposterous.
Also, don’t forget that the NBA doesn’t give a shit about you either and that the new NBA team might just be bad too. Meanwhile the MLB does care about Seattle.
Then there was this tweet.
Another sentiment I’ve seen from many Mariners fans. They’re okay with this disappointment because they believe it will all be okay in a couple of years!
YAY FOR YOUR DUMB OPTIMISM AND WELCOME TO REALITY, THE MARINERS BLOW AND HAVE SUCKED FOR 19 CONSECUTIVE YEARS. STOP DEFENDING THEM.
Give me all your excuses for an organization that has played like complete shit for 19 straight years. I’m waiting…
And I understand that there is a rebuild going on and the promise of a good team is sneaking up on us, but guess what? I’ve heard this story before and I won’t believe it till I actually see it. I hope that this rebuild finally solves everything, but lets not get ahead of ourselves.
Also, the thought process behind this tweet was just not there. This guy is literally talking shit to teams that have won a world series already but his point is that at least the Mariners have had less time to make it!

Being a Mariners fan is tough. Most people born during or before the 90s and then raised as Mariners fans remember either the 95 team that upset the damn Yankees in ALDS or the 2001 116 win team or both. But other than that, just a bunch of frustration and disappointment.
It’s kind of how I describe my love life, hit a couple very nice peaks but never quite got serious enough to morph into anything. Other than those peaks its been a roller coaster of unsteady women and relationships in my life (which is probably my fault, just like the Mariners).
Meanwhile, I have another unsteady relationship with the Mariners and it has caused much pain and suffering. But even with all the tough times, I will always stick by the Mariners because there’s always next year! (This last sentence was sarcasm…)
